Johannesburg, South Africa - EFC Welterweight Champion, Zaakir Badat has his next title defence locked and loaded against Nigerian knuckle-knocker Segun ‘Machinegun Shegz’ Ogunnoki in the main event of EFC 124 on the 5th of June.
One of the most impressive 170lb’ers in the new era of mixed-martial arts, Badat remains undefeated on African soil, leaving few competitors remaining ready to face him in the Hexagon. With all of his last three bouts against top-drawer opponents ending in the first round either due to his sandman-summoning right hand or his tap-taking grappling, it takes a very special contender willing for war. With the original opportunity being declined by Ndidi Alonu who was unable to accept the bout and top contender Peace Nguphane having just competed, EFC Matchmakers decided that west was still best and unearthed a worthy warrior from Abuja deserving of a shot at gold. Up steps Ogunnoki, a three-time national kickboxing champ who has yet to be submitted through his MMA career. With five superb finishes out of his 6 wins in AKO, ‘Machinegun’ is fully-loaded for the biggest fight of his career.
The co-main event features 2024’s breakout star, Thimna Mhlauli who has laid waste to the bantamweight division, facing former title contender Sibusiso Sovendle who finds himself battling to retain his top ranking spot. The addition to the main card of Mhlauli’s teammate, Steven ‘Guts’ Goncalves who takes on the undefeated Chadrack ‘Baba Yaga’ Yemba has excited fight fans as much as the return of Angolan Top Team’s standout Osvaldo Benedito who draws up to Gqeberha’s heavy-handed Kevin ‘Snakes’ Pretorius, whilst the curtain-riser will witness his teammate, Lihle ‘Rush Hour’ Ngamntwini staying out of the clutches of submission-specialist Kelvin Smit. The undercard also features six contests representing a deadly mix of the hottest current and former contenders in their respective weight divisions. Yet again, EFC is ready to deliver another spectacular evening, representing the best fighting talent from across the African continent, headlined by a massive title clash in the latest installment of the historic sporting rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa!
